Dr. Coles is a cultural anthropologist by training, with expertise in international humanitarian aid and development and state-society relationships in both globalist and local contexts. She conducted her dissertation research in post-war Bosnia-Herzegovina on international democracy and election efforts. Recent scholarship focuses on citizens being called upon to do the work of government through, for example, citizen councils and participatory decision-making.

Dr. Coles is a curricular innovator whose pedagogy centers experimentation, inquiry, societal relevance, and decentering oneself. She has long championed cultural immersion, interdisciplinarity and experiential learning, and close faculty-student mentorship. As a professor, she taught courses at the intersection of politics, anthropology, and international studies as well as qualitative research methodologies.  Recognized for innovative classroom instruction based on fieldwork-oriented exercises rooted in inquiry, she also spent two years directing an Austria-based study abroad semester, shifting its focus to contemporary issues in Europe and designing a beloved experiential excursion through parts of the former Yugoslavia.

Dr. Coles was the associate provost of institutional effectiveness at the University of Redlands prior to joining APP.  She designed and led their reaccreditation process, advised faculty and administrators on assessment models most likely to be meaningful, and helped improve data gathering and collection efforts. She is a strong advocate for structure and infrastructure that allow missions to thrive in daily practice.

Dr. Alessio Cappelli’s research focuses on sustainable management of agricultural, forestry, and food resources. During his PhD, he specialized in innovations and improvements in machines and plants for harvest, post-harvest, and processing in the main food production chains (cereal, flours, olive oil, and wine production chains). Although machines and plants represent his greatest passion, he developed other research interests, such as usability and the development of usable machines for the food industry, mainly for the olive-oil production chain, and assessing the impact of various food chains, proposing specific improvement strategies.

Dr. Cappelli has published one book and several scientific articles in indexed international journals. He has taught academic seminars regarding innovations in the cereal production chain at the University of Florence and taught the module “food processing equipment” for the master’s degree course in food sciences for innovation and authenticity at the Free University of Bolzano. He teaches ITS courses (two-year courses for high technical specialization post-high school diploma) including “agricultural and agro-industrial technologies,” “configuration of the quality control system in agro-food production,” and “processes and technologies for agro-food transformations.” He is also an official extra virgin olive oil sommelier with inclusion in the national list of technicians and experts of virgin and extra virgin olive oils in the Tuscany region. As of June 2023, he is an associate professor at San Raffaele University.

Meyrav Mor, PhD has been teaching with APP Graduate Institute in Nepal since 2022. Between 1996 and 2015, Meyrav set up the first two Waldorf schools in Nepal, at two kindergartens at the University of East London, and at a government school in rural Sussex. She has extensive international teaching experience, having taught kindergarten in Nepal, the United States, and the United Kingdom, primary classes 1-8 in Nepal and the United Kingdom, and children with special needs in Nepal and the United Kingdom.

For the past three decades, Meyrav has been training kindergarten and primary school teachers in China, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Nepal, Vietnam, and the United Kingdom. She has been developing curricula that cater to the heritage of communities around the world by interweaving transformative and experiential learning with culture and spirituality. Her work brings together the Waldorf methodology, progressive education approaches, and the traditions of specific communities to help them transition to the 21st century without losing their spiritual heritage and valuable traditional knowledge. For example, Meyrav designed a Buddhist curriculum for kindergarten through class 8 for children from the high Himalayas, the Tibetan community in exile, and other Buddhist communities.

Meyrav developed the Abiding Heart Education approach for kindergarten through class 12. This education approach, which includes curriculum design and content and teacher education courses, can be used by Buddhist and non-Buddhist communities around the world. Meyrav is the director of Abiding Heart Education, which has bases in the United States, Scotland, and Nepal where this new educational approach and curriculum is offered to regional and international students. At Abiding Heart, she lectures on the kindergarten and primary teacher education courses, human development, learning theories and methodologies, curriculum studies, contemplative parenting, and personal development study retreats.

Phoenix Kenney is a current PhD candidate at the University of Cambridge. Since 2015, she has been researching various social issues in Nepal and the Indian Himalayas. Her current doctoral dissertation looks at youth development in Nepal through the lens of education. In this work, she argues for informal and peer-led learning as an important tool for youth-led social change. Phoenix’s master’s thesis used social media-based methods to understand how youth-serving NGOs played crucial roles in recovery and reconstruction after the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake. This was a highly personal research project, as she was in Nepal as an APP student in Spring 2015 and at the time of the earthquake, was researching the role Sherpa women play in the communities of Thame and Thameteng, Solukhumbu.

Phoenix works with both domestic and international students in Kathmandu to help build their confidence for research. As an activist-researcher, she supports the decolonization of research methodology, arguing that everyone has unique abilities to ask questions and find their own answers.

Dr. Palmer is a biologist with a passion for understanding how organisms survive in challenging and changing environments. She has been fortunate to work in some amazing ecosystems including the neotropics as a researcher at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama and as a field researcher in the high desert working on the impact of climate change on alpine plants, including the ancient bristlecone pine in the White Mountains of California. As a university professor with 10 years of experience teaching, Dr. Palmer moved to Iceland as a Fulbright/NSF Arctic Research Scholar, working with the Iceland Forest Service to study mycorrhizal fungal communities in subarctic regions to help in establishing new forests. She is passionate about the outdoors, with a particular soft spot for trees, and is often found somewhere on the side of a mountain on an off-trail running adventure. She studied abroad on an environmental conservation field program in college and found it to be one of the most transformative and empowering experience.

As an undergraduate student at The University of Montana, Ashley began working in academics and discovered a passion for serving those pursuing higher education. She continued this work at Boise State University where she collaborated with administration and peer schools to push for college-wide changes, benefiting students, faculty, and staff.

Wanting a broader understanding of the student experience, she transitioned to admissions and began focusing on the program exploration and onboarding process, first at The College of Idaho and then at Colorado State University. She enjoys learning about the goals, motivations, and intentions of students to help them identify the right educational path. Ashley holds dual bachelor’s degrees in marketing and communications from the University of Montana and an MEd from Boise State University.
